Overview
This unit aims to develop students' foundational knowledge of residential building elements, structural systems, site operations, regulatory requirements, and construction documentation to support safe and compliant residential construction practice.

Unit learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Identify and describe the main building elements, structural systems and enclosure components for construction
- Explain the principles of site establishment, site organisation and site management for a construction site
- Apply basic structural concepts on buildings and structural stability
- Interpret and apply fundamental building codes, regulations, standards and codes of practice relevant to construction projects
- Read, analyse and interpret basic design and construction drawings to ensure regulatory compliance

Content
- Building components, structural systems, structural framing and basic enclosure and finishing systems
- Site establishment and preparation, site layout planning, temporary facilities, site accommodation and amenities, and basic site management practices
- Fundamental structural concepts including forces, structural behaviour, stability and loads on buildings
- Australian building regulatory framework, including building codes, regulations, standards and codes of practice
- Construction drawings, basic setting out information and introductory understanding of construction documentation
