Overview
This unit of study aims to provide students with an understanding of the different types of end-user Australian space applications such as research, communications and defence and recognize the importance of collaboration at the domestic and international level.

Unit learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Identify key stakeholders within the Australian space industry ecosystem and relationships between those key stakeholders
- Discuss and debate current opportunities within national and international space industries for entrepreneurs and researchers
- Apply knowledge of the space industry ecosystem to a relevant context
- Describe the space environment within our solar system and the fundamental principles which affect the design of space systems
- Appraise the types of space applications which are essential for modern society, their operation and use

Content
- This course presents foundational concepts and terminology in space science, rocket science and astronomy and describes how Australian Space Activities are organized and managed
- Overview of the space environment including key terms and definitions to operate effectively within space industries
- International space agencies, management of operations, space exploration and budgets
- Global and Australian Space Economy
- Overview of the Australian Space Agency, current research and capabilities
- Legislative and regulatory frameworks and institutions that govern space industries, both domestically and internationally
- Identification of opportunities in Australian Space Industry, overview of government road map and opportunities
- Industry and business engagement including investment in space
- Explore career opportunities now and in the future
- Provide an overview of Space Applications and space environment basic principles
- Extended outline of space related terms including but not limited to the solar system, orbital environment, safety and sustainability in space operations
- Tools of ground-based observations of space, especially optical, radio and radar astronomy
- Discussing gravity, basic principles of spacecraft design, and rocketry
- Investigate practicalities of space missions – fuelling interplanetary travel
- Use of imaging and remote sensing technology
