About Matthew

Choosing values over vocation

After beginning a path toward law, Matthew realised he wanted a career built on authentic relationships and tangible impact.

Commitment through change

While working full time, Matthew completed his law placements and studied carpentry part time, determined to see both journeys through.

Building a meaningful future

Now working on high-end residential projects, Matthew combines practical skill with strong mentorship and support to shape a career aligned with his values.

Searching for meaning

Matthew began studying a business degree at Swinburne, taking subjects aligned with a future in law. It was later, in his first work placement at an immigration law firm, that he realised his love of the course subjects didn’t align with his values.

Witnessing the power imbalance between the lawyer and their client, Matthew knew he wanted to build more authentic relationships. He had been considering swapping to a trade, with carpentry at the top of the list.

‘I liked the idea of working on a large project, so you’re building those meaningful relationships. Other trades just come in, do their bit, and leave. The carpenter or builder sees the whole job through.’ Matthew says.

Perseverance pays off

As someone determined to see things through, Matthew completed his subsequent law placements and commenced two subjects at a time for Swinburne’s Certificate III in Carpentry – all while working full time.

While his family were initially sceptical of the change, they respected his decision and he was surrounded by support, including many friends who were already in trades themselves. Matthew says the Swinburne trade school was excellent, led by passionate teaching staff and with the flexibility he needed to complete the course.

Support leads to success

Matthew’s advice to others considering their future career path is to think about how you want to live the rest of your life, not just the subjects you like studying. While he loved studying law, and feels proud to have finished the degree, he knew for him it didn’t match the ‘practicality of the real world’.

He also says how important it is to have great mentors – family, friends and in Matthew’s case members of his church – people who you can go to when things get hard, to help talk it through.

Matthew, now about to become fully qualified, works on high-end residential projects as both a project manager and on the tools. While his career path may have changed, his adaptability and determination will ensure his success continues.
