Swinburne University of Technology has appointed Dr Patryk Burka as the Director of Swinburne’s Aerostructures Innovation Research Hub (AIR Hub), strengthening the university’s leadership in advanced air mobility (AAM) and aerospace innovation.
Dr Burka has been part of the AIR Hub team since October 2024, most recently serving as Acting Director. In this role, he successfully guided the Hub through the post-Victorian Higher Education State Investment Fund (VHESIF) transition while ensuring it remains at the forefront of advanced air mobility technology and innovation.
“Swinburne’s AIR Hub has a unique opportunity to play a leading role in shaping the future of AAM in Australia,” says Dr Burka.
“I am excited to be part of this journey of translating research excellence into industry impact to ensure the Hub continues to deliver across aerospace manufacturing, uncrewed systems and emerging aviation technologies.”
An expert in aerospace composites, Dr Burka brings more than 15 years of global leadership in industrial research and development, specialising in advanced manufacturing and aerospace systems. His career spans major organisations including Airbus and Fraunhofer, where he made significant contributions to innovation and technology development.
“Since joining Swinburne, Dr Burka has been instrumental in advancing AIR Hub’s work in air mobility research and development,” says Swinburne’s Chief Scientist, Professor Virginia Kilborn.
“He has also forged impactful industry partnerships with Kite Aero and Airbus in composite aerostructures and AAM research.
“I look forward to seeing the AIR Hub continue to enable and lead the development of next-generation aerostructures and drive meaningful transformations across sectors,” says Professor Kilborn.
