Citation metrics

Citation analysis is one indication of research quality, with a range of tools available to help you calculate the number of times research has been cited by other researchers. Citation metrics are not an exact science and they are best used with other measures to assess the impact of the research.

How to find citation metrics

  1. Self-enrol in the Library Resources for Educators module.
  2. After self-enrolling, select Research metrics.
  3. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the Research metrics module to find article, journal, book and author metrics and alternative metrics such as PlumX.

Web of Science

(Clarivate Analytics)

Multidisciplinary Journals, conference proceedings, books, dissertations and theses The industry standard in many fields and the source of information for the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
Scopus (Elsevier) Multidisciplinary Journals, conference proceedings, books Overlaps with Web of Science, but also includes journals not covered in that database. Scopus is the source of information for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE).
Google Scholar Multidisciplinary Journals, conference proceedings, books, theses

Provides similar content to Web of Science and Scopus.

Google Scholar is not considered a reliable source of citation data by most disciplines.

If you're applying for a grant with a major funder, use Web of Science or Scopus.
